Depending on the kind of task and the vagaries of group politics, at times we worked altogether and at others in small groups that often consisted of best friend dyads. I tape recorded many of our lunchtime exchanges and various large and small group discussions, accumulating, I realized only Points of Departure and Disrupted Arrivals 37 when I began the arduous task of transcription, far more data than was reasonable. This compulsion to capture on tape is, however, attributable to more than the inexperience of an over-zealous ethnographer.

Tammy and Julia asked me to stay after school to watch their baseball practices; Lan asked me to watch and/or play a game during afternoon recess and Jani wanted me to watch her baseball practice also during afternoon recess. Having anticipated this response I had come prepared with some copies of New Moon, an American noncommercial magazine published as a feminist alternative to teen magazines. Many of the articles were written by girls of about their own age. What I had not anticipated was the girls’ complete and immediate dismissal and disinterest in even looking at New Moon, never mind considering using it as a model of what could be produced by our group.
