Content is the bedrock of culture. Competing with that culture—sometimes opposed to it and other times in creative tension with it—is the Catholic culture of Catholic universities. These Catholic cultures are in part determined by the cumulative impact of prevailing patterns at Catholic institutions, patterns determined to a large extent, once again, by the larger and more prestigious institutions. Strong as they are, however, these cultural forces within American higher education and American Catholic higher education do not entirely determine how a Catholic college or university will be Catholic.
