Disturbances of personal agency develop when primary caregivers are unable to structure the life of an infant. Unsteady caregivers probably have less capacity to acknowledge the child’s separate agency and at the same time to let the child feel that he is safe and certain.

Parents give their children the illusion that they (the parents) have a grip on the world and create a safe environment in which their children are held emotionally and physically. This gives them a glimpse of a world they can trust sufficiently to enter on their own (Winnicott, 1965). In communication through language, people give meaning to life. This is an interactive process, as people learn about themselves in contrast to others. Vygotsky suggests that human mental functions are of a dialogical nature and that in development, monologues appear later than dialogues.

The child’s language acquisition is not a purely cognitive process but rather a dialogical phenomenon. From the very first moment, the child plays an active role in the communication with the primary caregivers (Bruner, 1975). Infants’ linguistic development is not only based on an imitation of sounds but also on parental responsiveness, for instance when the parent laughs or touches the child in reaction to his jabber (Goldstein et al, 2003). Infants’ language only refers to the direct relations between the environment and the child; what is happening outside that situation cannot yet be described.
