As a follow-up to this activity – and linking back to Activity 1: Metaphors of the life course, and forward to Chapter 5: Life stories – you might think about the different ways that you could tell the story of your career: First, imagine you are telling your story to a close friend you have not seen for a long time – a person, who, in the past, you shared confidences with, who you trust, and who you feel knows you well.
Children’s dependence on carers (generally family members) and others (such as teachers) with responsibilities towards them has a number of implications. First, it means that children are rarely self-referred. qxd 1/22/04 5:25 PM Page 39 Counselling across the life course 39 them to counsellors, psychologists and psychotherapists (Pilgrim, 1997). This raises questions about the child’s motivation for therapeutic work and for their understanding or acceptance of the purpose of the counselling. A second, and perhaps even more significant, implication of children’s dependent status is that they are not usually in a position, either practically or psychologically, to ‘leave’ their primary social contexts.
The present chapter, therefore, addresses some of the specific issues concerned with counselling clients at different life stages. Separated out for reasons of convenience and manageability (viz. the dictum: ‘eat your elephant a spoonful at a time’), it needs to be remembered that these stages overlap chronologically and, to an even greater extent, psychologically and developmentally. Nonetheless, the following approximate age boundaries are suggested as useful distinctions for considering issues of counselling across the life course.
